Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has a “plan” to turn Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer into the most dominant Premier League partnership this season.
The Blues wrapped up the signing of 23-year-old Rogers for £117million from Aston Villa last week, making him the most expensive British player ever.
However, he will not officially link up with his new team-mates for a few more weeks, as he recovers from his World Cup campaign with England.
Speaking on his new signing, Alonso said: “In that position we needed an important player and I’m sure there were not many better options than Morgan Rogers.
“You need players who can have that almost instant impact and I’m sure Morgan won’t need much time to adapt to the club, the system and his team-mates.
“That was the idea, to get a top player, and Morgan is one of them.
“I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well.
“We need to have a good mix. If we get that balance right and those special players in the right positions, with good control, then we will be more competitive with and without the ball.”
After signing a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge, Rogers will be looking forward to his new partnership with best friend Palmer, who was constantly on the phone to his England team-mate during negotiations.
Chelsea expected to add more in transfer market
Despite splashing out on Rogers, Chelsea are expected to continue their summer spending spree.
The Blues are closing in on a £52m deal for France and Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, who will represent the club’s oldest signing at 26 since 2022.
He would join Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha in arriving at the club, as well as Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco.
Should they all sign, Chelsea would have a potential 40-man squad, with Alonso admitting some players will need to leave.
“We need to know that there will probably still be some movement,” Alonso added.
“We need to be flexible and quick to act. The main thing is that we have a clear idea, a clear plan that we have built.
“It will probably change before the transfer window closes.”
