Tottenham Hotspur have turned down a £46 million offer from Newcastle for Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall.
The Magpies are the latest club to enter the race for the young talent, with Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest also interested in the 20-year-old as a replacement for Elliot Anderson, who joined Manchester City for £116m this summer.
Oliver Glasner’s side have already had a bid rejected by Spurs for Bergvall, and reports from The Athletic claim higher proposals have also been swept aside.
However, the general understanding is that the North London club would sell the World Cup star, if the price is right.
Bergvall has a contract until 2031, but has asked to leave Spurs this summer amid concerns over his playing time under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
As a result, England’s top flight and the rest of Europe have been put on high alert, as they look to swoop in and sign a player widely regarded as one of the best prospects on the continent.
Spurs open door to exits amid spending spree
Tottenham have already spent big this summer, bringing in Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for a club-record £100m, alongside Mateus Fernandes (£85m) from West Ham, Jan Paul van Hecke (£52m) from Brighton, as well as Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers.
Reports claim the spending will not stop there, either, with a move for Manchester City’s Savinho on the verge of being completed, and ambitions to sign further forward players before the 2026/27 campaign begins.
The new arrivals mean there is limited space at Spurs, who will not have any European football to accommodate a bloated squad.
Bergvall has made 78 appearances for the 2025 Europa League winners since joining from Djurgarden in a deal worth £8.5m.
Last season, he turned out 33 times, scoring once and recording five assists, despite being hampered by injury problems for much of the campaign.
A left ankle sprain kept him out between January and March, before he eventually recovered and was part of Graham Potter’s Sweden squad that participated in the 2026 World Cup.
