Manchester United have completed a move for Tottenham academy winger Tynan Thompson.
The Red Devils will pay a total of £8 million for the youngster, £4m up front and another £4m in add-ons.
Thompson was named in Spurs’ first-team squad three times in the 2025-26 campaign, but departs amid concerns over the academy pathway in North London and personal family circumstances.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side retain matching rights for any future sale of the wide man, as well as a 20% sell-on clause.
In a statement welcoming their new addition, United said: “Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young winger Tynan Thompson, subject to registration.
“The England youth international has joined from Tottenham Hotspur. The 18-year-old scored 13 goals and contributed six assists last season across Under-18s to Under-21s level, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games.
“His performances earned him opportunities within Spurs’ first-team matchday squads. Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”
United invest in ‘superstar’ potential
Thompson was one of the most exciting players inside Tottenham’s academy, and has been touted to have a huge future in English football.
He signed his first professional contract in the capital just over 12 months ago, in May 2025.
Last season, he bagged 13 goals and six assists in all competitions for Tottenham’s youth teams, including seven strikes in the UEFA Youth League.
Reports claim Spurs are maximising their sales this summer, and Thompson’s departure follows a pattern under new head coach De Zerbi.
Luka Vuskovic (19) has already departed for Brighton in a deal worth £48m, with Spurs also retaining a sell-on clause and matching rights for the young Croatian.
20-year-old Lucas Bergvall is also keen to depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in search of a starting role elsewhere in the Premier League.
United have a steep history of developing young talent. They have a tradition of having one academy player in their matchday squad for every match, and Thompson has been promised opportunities in the first team.
A direct, pacey and composed winger, the 18-year-old will feature on the left if given a chance by Michael Carrick.
He has made seven appearances for the England Under-18s side, and is currently on track to continue progressing through the ranks.
