Arsenal fell to a surprising home defeat, with Wigan Athletic claiming a 0-1 victory in what proved to be a disjointed afternoon for the hosts.

Wigan settled quickly and took the lead through Noni Madueke in the eleventh minute, a goal that seemed to unsettle Arsenal rather than spark them. Gabriel Martinelli pulled one back seven minutes later, and Jack Hunt restored Wigan's advantage at 23 minutes. Gabriel Jesus levelled again almost immediately, only for Matthew Smith to give the visitors a 3-2 lead before the half-hour mark. The opening period was frantic and poorly controlled, with neither defence offering much assurance.

Viktor Gyökeres added a fourth for Wigan at the start of the second half, and although Leandro Trossard replied on 62 minutes, Marli Salmon and Dara Costelloe extended the visitors' lead in quick succession. Wigan were now in firm control, dictating the tempo and forcing Arsenal into increasingly desperate responses.

Myles Lewis-Skelly gave the scoreline a degree of respectability for Arsenal, but substitutions from both benches did little to change the pattern. Owen Moxon, Joseph Hungbo and Harrison Bettoni all entered for Wigan and helped them see the game out. Will Aimson added a late goal to confirm the margin.

Wigan had the clearer structure throughout the second half and deserved their win. For Arsenal, the defensive lapses were numerous and the lack of cohesion across both halves will require serious examination.
