Southend United beat Rochdale 2-1 on Tuesday evening in a match that swung decisively in the opening half-hour before both sides spent the remainder chasing their own objectives.

Rochdale made the brighter start. Andrew Dallas put them ahead inside three minutes, and although Kyron Gordon and James Golding were booked in the 17th minute in what appeared a fractious passage of play, the visitors still looked composed. Dallas added a second moments later, and when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe extended the lead to 3-0 by the 20th minute, Rochdale had effectively settled the contest before Southend had properly entered it.

Tom Hopper pulled one back for the hosts in the 27th minute, giving Southend something to build on at the interval. Tyler Smith then scored at the start of the second half to make it 3-2, and for a spell the home side pushed for an equaliser.

Casey Pettit was booked twice, in the 55th and 76th minutes, reducing Rochdale to ten men and handing Southend a numerical advantage in the closing stages. A triple substitution by Rochdale in the 67th minute, bringing on Slavi Spasov, Oliver Coker and Charley Kendall, had already reshaped their shape before Pettit's dismissal complicated matters further.

Despite the late pressure, Southend could not find a third goal. Ben Goodliffe and Jack Bridge were both cautioned in the 88th minute, and Connor McBride received a yellow card a minute later, lending a tetchy finish to a game Rochdale ultimately controlled when it mattered most.
