Colchester United fell to a heavy home defeat on Saturday, with Shrewsbury Town running out comfortable winners in a match that the visitors controlled for long stretches.

Shrewsbury made their intentions clear almost immediately. Will Goodwin scored in the fourth minute to settle any early nerves, and the lead doubled through N. Freeman at the ten-minute mark. Colchester struggled to find a foothold in the opening period, and Arthur Read added a third before the interval to give Shrewsbury a commanding cushion.

The second half offered little respite for the home side. Iwan Morgan extended the advantage shortly after the restart, and though Kyreece Lisbie pulled one back for Colchester in the 53rd minute, Josh Ruffels restored the four-goal margin within sixty seconds to snuff out any sign of a recovery. Finley Barbrook added a fifth in the 63rd minute, by which point Shrewsbury had already made several of their substitutions, bringing on Kevin Berkoe, Owura Edwards and Tom Sang simultaneously.

Colchester's afternoon worsened further when goalkeeper Matt Macey received a red card in the 84th minute, with Tommy McDermott and Romeo Akachukwu having already been introduced from the bench. Rob Hunt had added another before the dismissal, and Kane Vincent-Young concluded the scoring in stoppage time.

The result leaves Colchester's home form a serious concern. Shrewsbury, by contrast, travel back to the Midlands with maximum points and a goal difference that will attract attention across the division.
