Reading and Bolton Wanderers shared a point in a frenetic evening fixture that produced seven goals and enough substitutions to suggest neither manager entirely trusted what he started with.

Bolton took control early. Paddy Lane opened the scoring in the 17th minute, and Paudie O'Connor doubled the advantage ten minutes later. Reading looked short of ideas and short of pace in the first half, and when Jack Marriott added a third on 36 minutes, the home side appeared to be facing a heavy defeat. Kamari Doyle made it four before the interval, and the evening looked done as a contest.

Reading, to their credit, refused to accept that verdict.

Will Keane pulled one back on 59 minutes, and Bolton lost Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan to a substitution in the same moment, disrupting their rhythm. Ruben Rodrigues reduced the deficit on 70 minutes, then Corey Blackett-Taylor scored on 71 to make it 4-3 and suddenly a very different match was being played.

Charlie Savage levelled with ten minutes remaining, drawing Reading level at 4-4. Ehibhatiomhan, back on the pitch, restored Bolton's lead on 85 minutes. Mason Burstow equalised again in stoppage time to make it 5-5, and C. Forino was dismissed in the same minute, leaving Bolton to hold on with ten men.

They managed it. The final scoreline of 1-1 reflects only the barest outline of an extraordinary evening.
