Shrewsbury Town defeated Walsall 2-0 on Saturday lunchtime, a result built on the foundations of the first half and defended through a frantic closing hour.

Shrewsbury took the lead on 28 minutes when Priestley Farquharson converted, and Iwan Morgan doubled the advantage just before the interval to send the hosts into the break with a comfortable cushion. Sam Stubbs was booked for Walsall before the whistle, a sign of the frustration already settling in the away camp.

The second half deteriorated into a scrappy, frequently interrupted affair. Shrewsbury's Tommy McDermott was dismissed on the hour, and within two minutes Farquharson followed him down the tunnel, leaving the home side significantly reduced. Walsall pushed hard to exploit the numerical advantage, with Trey Samuel-Ogunsuyi and Will Boyle both introduced within the same minute as the visitors reshaped.

A flurry of changes between the 68th and 69th minutes from both sides further disrupted any rhythm, with Freeman, Ismeal Kabia and Albert Adomah all entering proceedings. Shrewsbury weathered the storm through organisation and resolve.

Courtney Clarke and Jamille Matt came on in the 82nd and 83rd minutes as Walsall made one final attempt to salvage something, but goalkeeper Sam Hornby produced a strong moment to preserve the clean sheet on 85 minutes. Josh Ruffels was cautioned in stoppage time as tensions rose, though the result was never seriously in doubt after the interval.
