Grimsby Town beat Walsall 2-1 in a heavily disrupted evening fixture on 18 February, with the result shaped as much by the referee's notebook as by the football itself.

Walsall started the sharper side. K. Łopata opened the scoring inside seven minutes, and when Priestley Farquharson added a second before the half-hour, the visitors looked comfortable and organised. Grimsby were ragged in response, struggling to retain possession and offering little in the final third.

The match turned at half-time, though not through tactics alone. Both goalkeepers, Sam Hornby and Myles Roberts, were dismissed in the space of the interval, forcing both teams to reorganise before the second half began. Andy Cook, who would prove the dominant figure of the evening, pulled one back for Grimsby almost immediately after the restart.

Cook scored again in the 66th minute and completed his hat-trick two minutes later to give Grimsby an unlikely lead. George McEachran and Charles Vernam were also booked around that period as the game grew fractious. Aaron Pressley and Harrison Burke were cautioned shortly after, with V. Harper also receiving a card on the Walsall side.

Jaze Kabia saw red for Walsall in the 80th minute, effectively ending any prospect of a comeback. Sam Hornby's second dismissal, noted at 86 minutes, added further confusion to an already chaotic evening. Evan Khouri's late booking confirmed a match that neither side will look back on with any satisfaction.
