Gillingham lost at home to Accrington Stanley on Monday afternoon, a result that did them few favours in what remains a tight division. The visitors were the sharper side from the first whistle and deserved their victory.

Accrington made their intentions clear early. Nelson Khumbeni gave them the lead on 24 minutes, and Josh Woods added a second nine minutes later. Andy Smith's goal just before the break put the game beyond Gillingham's reach before the interval had even arrived.

Gillingham introduced Garath McCleary after the break and he had an immediate effect, pulling one back on 56 minutes. But Accrington responded swiftly. Paddy Madden restored the two-goal cushion on 58 minutes, and the home side never truly threatened from that point.

D. Abimbola was lively off the bench for Gillingham, coming on in the 74th minute and clearly unsettling the Accrington backline, though the finishing quality was not there to reward his industry. Sam Vokes and Louie Dayal were both introduced in the closing stages but the deficit was already too large to overturn.

Madden added a further goal on 80 minutes to put the result beyond any doubt, and Accrington saw out the remaining minutes with very little difficulty.

The visitors managed their lead well in the second half, showed good organisation, and leave with three points that reflect their performance across the ninety minutes.
