Walsall drew 2-2 with Gillingham on Friday afternoon in a match that produced few quiet moments and plenty of late intervention.

Gillingham settled the better in the opening exchanges and took the lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi on 21 minutes, a goal that gave them a platform they largely maintained until the interval. Charlie Lakin added a second just before the break, and Gillingham went into half-time with reasonable control of proceedings.

The second half changed the picture considerably. Walsall came out with more urgency and began to press higher. Bradley Dack reduced the deficit almost immediately after the restart, and Daniel Kanu drew the hosts level before the hour mark, finishing twice in the space of three minutes to level at 2-2. The ground shifted noticeably at that point, with Walsall carrying genuine momentum.

Gillingham introduced Josh Andrews and Jonathan Williams from the bench, and both looked to restore some stability in the final quarter. Albert Adomah also came on for Walsall, and Sam Gale had an effort in stoppage time that came to nothing.

Neither side managed a winner, and the draw felt an honest reflection of a second half in which the balance of play swung sharply from one end to the other. Walsall will feel they came from behind to earn it; Gillingham will consider two first-half goals and a point insufficient reward.
