Cheltenham Town claimed a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United on Monday afternoon, a result that felt earned rather than fortunate by the time the final whistle sounded.

Cambridge carried the greater threat in the opening half and might reasonably have led before Sullay Kaikai gave Cheltenham the advantage on 34 minutes, finishing with composure to settle the home side.

The second half brought sustained Cambridge pressure and a flurry of changes from both benches. Dominic Ball entered the action on 59 minutes, followed shortly by Ryan Broom and Mo Faal as each manager sought to shift the contest. George Hoddle and Shayne Francis Lavery came on together in the 73rd minute, Cambridge throwing fresh legs at a defence that had begun to look stretched.

Cole Deeming and G. Miller were introduced with six minutes remaining as Cheltenham looked to hold what they had, and Michael Morrison provided additional defensive cover moments later. Elliott Nevitt and goalkeeper Jake Eastwood both entered in stoppage time, the latter suggesting some late drama around the Cheltenham goal that the scoreline ultimately did not reflect.

L. Young's appearance for Cambridge in the 61st minute added another body to what became an increasingly congested midfield, yet the visitors could not find a way through.

Cheltenham defended with discipline in the closing stages and Cambridge, despite their late efforts, lacked the precision to test Jake Eastwood in any meaningful way.
