Newport County lost 0-2 to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday, a result that flattered neither side given the extraordinary volume of late changes but reflected Shrewsbury's greater composure across the ninety minutes.

Shrewsbury took control early. Mal Benning opened the scoring on 29 minutes, and Newport struggled to respond with any real conviction before the interval. Tommy McDermott reduced the deficit on 44 minutes, only for Cameron Evans to restore Shrewsbury's two-goal lead a minute later, leaving Newport with a mountain to climb after the break.

The second half became a test of nerve rather than football. Both benches emptied as the hour mark passed, with Newport throwing on Bobby Kamwa, John Marquis, Ismeal Kabia and Joe Thomas in quick succession between the 68th and 73rd minutes. Shrewsbury matched them, introducing Will Boyle and Gerard Garner around the same period. The changes disrupted rhythm on both sides, producing a disjointed final quarter that suited the visitors perfectly.

Newport pressed in the closing stages and Courtney Baker-Richardson threatened briefly, but Shrewsbury held their shape. Gerard Garner added a second goal in stoppage time, and further late entries from Nathaniel Opoku, Taylor Perry, Ciaran Brennan and B. Ihionvien could not alter the outcome.

Newport remain vulnerable at home and will need considerably more structure in midfield if results are to improve. Shrewsbury, by contrast, managed the game sensibly and deserved their points.
