Preston North End beat Oxford United 3-0 in a match that generated far more incident than the scoreline suggests, with fourteen bookings spread across ninety minutes lending the evening a fractious edge from the outset.

Preston settled quickly. Michal Helik headed them in front inside five minutes, and Milutin Osmajic doubled the advantage at twelve. The hosts looked organised and purposeful, pressing Oxford high and allowing them little room to build from the back. Ciaron Brown's booking at twenty-two minutes was the first sign of Oxford's growing frustration.

Daniel Jebbison was cautioned on the stroke of half-time, and within sixty seconds of the restart Brodie Spencer followed him into the referee's book. Will Lankshear extended Preston's lead at fifty-four minutes, effectively ending the contest as a competition.

What followed was a procession of yellow cards rather than genuine attacking play. Brown received his second caution at sixty-one minutes and left Oxford with ten men for the remainder. Andrija Vukcevic, Nik Prelec, Christ Makosso, Will Vaulks, Thierry Small and Mark Harris all saw yellow in the closing stages, with Jordan Storey booked in stoppage time.

Oxford's numerical disadvantage made little practical difference by that point. Preston had already done their work through patient, direct football in the opening hour. Three goals, one red card and a sequence of cynical fouls told the story of a side that had run out of answers long before the final whistle.
