Everton and Manchester United shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw on Monday evening, a result that will satisfy neither side but reflected the competitive nature of a match that shifted considerably in its final half-hour.

United looked the more purposeful side for much of the contest, and Benjamin Sesko gave them the lead on 58 minutes, finishing with the composed authority that has defined his season. The Slovenian then had the ball in the net again on 71 minutes, only for the flag to cut short his celebrations.

Everton, who had struggled to create anything of substance before the hour, found renewed energy through substitution. Tyrique George, introduced two minutes after Sesko's disallowed goal, added directness down the flank and unsettled United's defensive shape. Pickford was forced into a sharp stop at 77 minutes, and from the resulting pressure Everton levelled through Beto on 79 minutes after good approach play down the left.

The closing stages grew fractious. Mazraoui collected bookings in the 77th and 90th minutes to earn an early bath, reducing United to ten men at the worst possible moment. Tarkowski was cautioned on 83 minutes for Everton, while Heaven and Fernandes both saw yellow in stoppage time as frustrations boiled over.

Maguire's late header was cleared off the line, denying United what would have been an undeserved winner given the balance of the second half.
