Charlton Athletic beat Bristol City 2-1 at The Valley on Friday afternoon, a result that lifts them further clear of the relegation places with five games remaining.

Bristol City made the brighter start. Scott Twine, who had already tested the goalkeeper in the eleventh minute, converted from the spot on the half-hour to give the visitors a deserved lead, with Lyndon Dykes drawing the foul that prompted the penalty. Charlton had been second to the ball and struggled to impose themselves in the opening period.

The second half changed the shape of the contest almost immediately. Sam Morsy, introduced at the interval, brought composure to the home midfield and within ten minutes Charlton had levelled through Noah Eile, who finished calmly after good work down the right. The momentum did not shift back.

Bristol City made several changes as the hour approached, with Harry Clarke, Tyreece Campbell and I. Fullah all coming on, yet the visitors lost their defensive organisation in doing so. Matty Godden came closest to restoring their lead but his header in the 79th minute drifted wide. Charlton punished them. Jayden Fevrier and Sinclair Armstrong both struck in the 86th minute, the second goal settling any remaining uncertainty about the outcome.

George Earthy was withdrawn late on for Charlton, having run himself into the ground across the afternoon. The home crowd acknowledged it.
