Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Liverpool 3-0 on Friday evening in a result that flatters neither side's performance across ninety minutes, though Wolves deserved their victory on the balance of play.

Santiago Bueno gave the hosts the lead on 17 minutes, heading home from a set piece to reward an organised and aggressive opening from Gary O'Neil's side. Liverpool struggled to impose themselves in the first half, with their midfield unable to find the tempo needed to unlock a well-drilled Wolves defensive shape.

The second half brought a flurry of substitutions from both benches, and the match became fragmented. Mohamed Salah twice went close in the 53rd and 55th minutes, and Adam Armstrong tested the Wolves goalkeeper at 61, but Liverpool's pressure lacked conviction. Rodrigo Gomes and Hee-chan Hwang provided energy down the flanks, and it was Hwang who settled matters with a goal in the 75th minute, before converting again in stoppage time to seal a 3-0 win.

Liverpool's defensive frailties were exposed on the counter repeatedly in the second period, with Ibrahima Konaté replaced after struggling against Wolves' pace through the middle.

The late flurry of changes from Arne Slot, including Trey Nyoni and Kieran Morrison, underlined the extent to which Liverpool had lost control. For Wolves, this was a composed and thoroughly merited performance that will lift them considerably in the table.
