Manchester United beat Leeds United 2-1 on Monday evening, though the scoreline understates how much the home side had to work through before securing the points.

Leeds moved with purpose early. Noah Okafor gave them the lead inside five minutes, and further contributions from Matheus Cunha and Okafor again, either side of a James Justin addition, meant the visitors held a commanding advantage by the interval. United looked disorganised and short of ideas in the first half, offering little resistance to a Leeds side that pressed with conviction and moved the ball with directness.

The match turned sharply after the break. Lisandro Martínez scored twice in the 55th and 56th minutes, reducing the arrears and shifting the momentum inside two chaotic minutes. Luke Shaw had already pulled one back at 49 minutes, so United's recovery was rapid and, for a period, appeared complete.

Bruno Fernandes added another in the 64th minute to draw United level, and the home support, subdued for much of the evening, began to believe. Casemiro and Diogo Dalot then exchanged with Bryan Mbeumo and Wilfried Gnonto in a frantic spell of substitutions, with Gruev also introduced for Leeds as both managers sought fresh legs.

Sean Longstaff settled the matter in the 86th minute, converting what proved to be the winner. Leeds pressed for an equaliser but could not find one. United's second-half performance was considerably more assured than their first, and they ultimately deserved the three points.
