Portsmouth drew 1-1 with Hull City on Saturday, a result that felt like a fair reflection of a match that took some time to ignite before producing a frantic final half-hour.

The first hour offered little of note. Both sides were cautious and disorganised in equal measure, rarely threatening to settle the game. The breakthrough arrived in a chaotic three-minute period that shifted the tempo entirely. Gustavo Caballero put Hull ahead on 58 minutes, only for Portsmouth to respond almost immediately through Amir Hadziahmetovic at 60. John Lundstram and Matt Crooks were both booked in the minutes that followed, suggesting the match had found a harder edge.

Crooks then gave Portsmouth the lead on 73 minutes, and Liam Millar extended it three minutes later, putting the home side in apparent control. Hull, to their credit, refused to accept that position.

Patrick McNair pulled one back on 85 minutes, and Ivor Pandur was dismissed shortly before that, leaving Portsmouth a man down in the closing stages. Hull pressed the advantage, and Madiodio Dia equalised in stoppage time to level the contest at 1-1. Lewie Coyle was also dismissed in the final moments, ending the match in some disorder.

Portsmouth will feel the damage most acutely. They held a two-goal lead with fifteen minutes remaining and allowed Hull to recover entirely. The late concession, and the late red card, left their afternoon in a considerably worse state than it had appeared.
