Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, a result that flattered neither side but reflected the fractured, stop-start nature of a game repeatedly interrupted by the referee's notebook.

Leeds set the tempo early and were rewarded when Anton Stach headed them in front on 31 minutes, a well-worked set-piece that Villa struggled to deal with. The hosts looked uncertain in possession through the opening half and Jaka Bijol's booking just after the interval suggested Leeds retained the physical edge as the second period began.

Villa gradually worked their way back into it. Ross Barkley and Jadon Sancho entered the fray together on 61 minutes and the introduction sharpened Villa's attacking intent. Tammy Abraham equalised on 75 minutes, converting from close range to draw the hosts level, though his afternoon ended prematurely when a second yellow card dismissed him on 88 minutes, leaving Villa to see out the final moments a man short.

Leeds also finished with ten men. Jaka Bijol collected his second booking on 62 minutes and walked, which tilted the balance back towards Villa for a spell. Lukas Nmecha and Emiliano Buendía were introduced simultaneously on 73 minutes as Leeds reorganised, and Ilia Gruev's late effort deep into stoppage time was not enough to steal all three points.

The draw leaves both clubs with questions to answer, particularly regarding discipline, with five bookings and two red cards between them.
