Ipswich Town fell to a heavy home defeat on Tuesday evening, losing to Hull City in a match that slipped away from them long before the final whistle.

Hull took control in the first half through Lewie Coyle, who broke the deadlock on 36 minutes. Akin Famewo added a second six minutes later, and Ipswich had little answer to the visitors' organisation and directness in the opening period.

The game accelerated into chaos shortly after the interval. Oliver McBurnie made it three almost immediately from the restart, and then Wes Burns extended the lead on 57 minutes, compounding a miserable evening for the home side. The substitutions that followed came quickly on both sides, with Leif Davis, Matt Crooks, Kyle Joseph, John Lundstram, Anis Mehmeti, Azor Matusiwa, John Egan, Amir Hadziahmetovic and others all introduced as managers attempted to reshape their respective sides.

Iván Azón and Cédric Kipré continued to press as the clock wound down, though Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton was called into action late on, reflecting just how thoroughly Hull had dominated. Goalkeeper Ivor Pandur had been relatively untroubled throughout for the visitors.

Hull were sharper, more direct and better organised across all areas of the pitch. Ipswich struggled to create anything of substance and were punished repeatedly for defensive errors made at inopportune moments. The scoreline reflected the difference between the two sides with uncomfortable accuracy.
