Brighton left Villa Park with a point after a goalless draw on Wednesday evening, a result that flattered Aston Villa more than it did their visitors, who carried the greater threat across much of the ninety minutes.

Carlos Baleba set the tone early, forcing a moment of alertness from Emiliano Martínez within two minutes. Brighton sustained that pressure and were rewarded when Jan Paul van Hecke found space in the Villa box late in the first half, though the effort ultimately came to nothing with Martínez again called into action moments later at the 41-minute mark.

Villa made changes at the break, bringing on Morgan Rogers, and the substitute offered some much-needed forward momentum before Leon Bailey entered the fray alongside Ross Barkley at the hour mark. Brighton responded with Olivier Boscagli, and the game opened up considerably.

The most dramatic passage arrived in the final quarter. Alysson was involved at 74 minutes before Tammy Abraham drew a yellow card a minute later, raising the temperature inside the ground. Villa then introduced Victor Lindelöf and H. Howell in the closing stages, while Brighton turned to Yankuba Minteh and Charalampos Kostoulas, with Jack Hinshelwood following shortly after.

Neither goalkeeper was beaten. James Milner's booking in the 22nd minute and Joël Veltman's caution a minute later illustrated a game that carried edge without ever fully igniting. Brighton will feel they deserved more.
