Aston Villa beat Newcastle United 3-0 in a contest that rarely threatened to go any other way after the opening exchanges.

Villa moved in front inside four minutes through Douglas Luiz, and Tammy Abraham doubled the lead at 14 minutes before the visitors had found any rhythm. Newcastle's defensive shape looked uncertain from the first whistle, and Villa punished them repeatedly in transition.

Malick Thiaw pulled one back for Newcastle at 25 minutes, offering the away side a foothold, but Lucas Digne restored Villa's two-goal cushion just before the interval. Half-time substitutions from both benches followed, with Emiliano Martínez replaced by Marco Bizot between the sticks for Villa.

The second half brought a flurry of changes. Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle brief encouragement with a goal at 52 minutes, but Jacob Ramsey extended Villa's lead at 55 minutes to settle the outcome. Emiliano Buendía and Ollie Watkins came on at 65 minutes as Villa managed the game, with Sandro Tonali, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon introduced by Newcastle in an attempt to alter the flow.

Tonali saw a second booking at 76 minutes, reducing Newcastle to ten men and ending any realistic hope of a comeback. Joe Willock added a late goal for the visitors, while Nick Woltemade came on in the closing stages. Villa saw the game out with minimum fuss.

The result left Newcastle with serious questions about their defensive organisation against a well-drilled home side.
