Bristol Rovers and Grimsby Town served up a chaotic, open afternoon that ended 1-1, though the scoreline flatters neither side's defensive organisation.

Grimsby made the better start. Kofi Balmer put the visitors ahead inside two minutes, and when Joe Quigley added a second at seven minutes, the away side looked comfortable and well-drilled. Rovers struggled to press high with any conviction and Grimsby's shape held firm through the opening quarter.

The match shifted before half-time. Andy Cook pulled one back for Rovers on 38 minutes, reducing the deficit to a single goal, and Clinton Mola levelled matters before the interval. Two goals in seven first-half minutes changed the atmosphere entirely and Grimsby left the pitch at the break having surrendered control they had worked hard to establish.

The second half brought substitutions and a looser, more fragmented contest. Ellis Harrison came on at 51 minutes for Rovers and gave them physical presence in the final third. Grimsby responded with changes of their own, bringing on Yusuf Akhamrich, Luke Thomas, and Darragh Burns in quick succession around the hour mark. The tempo increased but clarity of thought declined.

Fabrizio Cavegn went close for Grimsby in the 83rd minute without reward. Both sides pushed in the closing stages, with Tyrell Sellars-Fleming and Mees Rijks introduced late, but the score held at 1-1.

A point apiece, though both managers will know opportunities to win this game were left on the pitch.
