Chelsea and Newcastle drew 1-1 on Saturday afternoon, a result that flattered neither side but reflected a contest that shifted in momentum several times across ninety minutes.

Newcastle took the lead through Anthony Gordon in the 18th minute, and for the following half-hour they looked the more composed side. Chelsea were loose in possession and struggled to press with any consistency. Moisés Caicedo pulled them level seven minutes later, finishing with conviction after a period of sustained pressure, and Wesley Fofana was withdrawn shortly before the break following what appeared to be a precautionary substitution.

Chelsea came out sharper after the interval. Liam Delap, introduced at half-time, gave them greater physicality in attack, and Roméo Lavia brought more discipline to the midfield. The home side had the better of the second half until the final quarter of an hour, when Newcastle introduced fresh legs and unsettled them.

Anthony Elanga caused problems down the right flank after coming on, and when Jorrel Hato departed injured on 82 minutes, Chelsea's defensive organisation briefly faltered. Aaron Ramsdale made a sharp save in the 84th minute to preserve the draw, and Dan Burn's late withdrawal for Newcastle added to a stop-start conclusion.

Lewis Hall entered the fray for the visitors in the 89th minute as the game ran out of time. Neither goalkeeper was tested enough to separate the sides. One point apiece, and both managers will find reason for concern.
