Gillingham won 3-0 at Chesterfield on Tuesday evening, a result that flatters neither side given the home team's disorganisation throughout but does reflect the visitors' greater composure when chances arrived.

Chesterfield began poorly. S. Curtis was booked inside the first quarter of an hour and Omar Beckles followed him into the referee's book seven minutes later, leaving the hosts stretched and nervous. Gillingham read the tension well and grew into the match without ever needing to impose themselves through sustained pressure.

The second half brought the goals. Remeao Hutton, who had been active enough in the first period, was replaced at the break along with several others as both managers shuffled their packs. James Berry and Dylan Duffy came on for Gillingham around the hour mark, and the fresh legs made a difference. Berry added energy in midfield and Garath McCleary, introduced at the same time as Sam Vokes, provided the forward threat that had been missing.

Freddie Ladapo extended the lead with twelve minutes remaining. Cameron Antwi then saw red for Chesterfield in the 81st minute, and the numerical advantage allowed Gillingham to close the match out with little difficulty. Ethan Coleman was booked twice in the final minutes, the second card reducing Chesterfield to nine men and summarising an evening to forget for the home side.

Gillingham's discipline and structure proved the difference on a difficult evening in Derbyshire.
