Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in a contest that the hosts largely controlled, though they were made to work harder than the scoreline suggests before the final whistle.

Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing with the directness that has defined his Liverpool performances this season. The goal came against the run of early play, which had seen Spurs probe with reasonable intent, but it shifted the dynamic firmly in Liverpool's favour.

Xavi Simons was withdrawn in the 56th minute for Tottenham, a change that signalled their growing frustration in attempting to find an equaliser. Igor Tudor's side had looked increasingly stretched after the interval, and the second half brought a flurry of substitutions from both benches as the game fragmented around the hour mark.

Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitiké, and Curtis Jones all entered for Liverpool at the 64th minute, a bold triple change that underlined the home side's intent to see the game out on their own terms. Randal Kolo Muani and Callum Olusesi followed for Spurs a minute later as Tudor threw bodies forward.

Trey Nyoni and Federico Chiesa came on in the closing stages for Liverpool, while Richarlison and James Rowswell entered for the visitors in stoppage time, by which point the result was beyond reasonable dispute.

Tottenham created little of genuine threat throughout and leave Anfield with nothing to show for their efforts.
