Fulham beat Manchester City 1-0 on Wednesday evening, a result that will sharpen questions about City's capacity to grind through matches when the first goal eludes them.

Fulham were the more purposeful side from the off. Antoine Semenyo caused problems down the right before Joachim Andersen headed Fulham in front on 30 minutes, turning in from close range to give the visitors a deserved lead. City looked disjointed in the final third, and Erling Haaland, isolated for long spells, managed little of consequence before being replaced.

Guardiola made changes either side of half-time, introducing Omar Marmoush at the break and withdrawing Bernardo Silva shortly before it, moves that altered City's shape without improving their output. Fulham sat compact and transitioned with discipline, Josh King and Rodrigo Muniz coming on at the hour to shore up their attacking options as City pressed higher.

Rayan Cherki replaced Nico O'Reilly on 71 minutes as City searched for an equaliser, and Oscar Bobb was introduced a minute later, but neither changed the texture of the game. Fulham defended in numbers, with Harrison Reed and Nico González bossing the midfield exchanges.

Phil Foden, one of City's more lively performers, departed on 66 minutes through apparent injury, removing what little creative threat City had fashioned. Nico González collected a booking in the 83rd minute but Fulham held firm. A composed, mature away performance.
