Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in a match that swung dramatically across its ninety minutes, delivering a result that will satisfy the home support considerably more than the scoreline might suggest.

Liverpool started with purpose. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the sixth minute, and Benjamin Sesko doubled the advantage eight minutes later, leaving United with considerable ground to recover before the half-hour mark had passed.

The second half told an entirely different story. Three goals arrived within the opening fourteen minutes after the restart. Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back for Liverpool in the 47th minute, Amad Diallo equalised for United a minute later, and Luke Shaw added a third in the 49th minute to put the hosts ahead for the first time. The tempo was relentless and the defending from both sides was frequently uncertain.

Liverpool responded through Cody Gakpo in the 56th minute, levelling again and sending the match into a frantic concluding period. United made changes at the 75th minute, bringing on Kobbie Mainoo among others, and the substitutions appeared to stabilise their shape. Bruno Fernandes extended United's lead in the 81st minute, and late efforts from Gakpo and Federico Chiesa could not convert into goals for the visitors.

Leny Yoro had the final touch of note in stoppage time. United held on to claim three points from a match that showed little respect for defensive organisation on either side.
