Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon in a match that shifted dramatically after the interval, with both sides exchanging substitutes and momentum in equal measure across a frantic second half.

The first meaningful action arrived at 26 minutes when Jordan Williams was involved in the opening goal, though the game remained level heading into the break.

The second half opened with immediate change. Luke Ayling and Sontje Hansen both came on at the interval, and the tempo altered accordingly. Kaly Sène gave one side the lead on 63 minutes before Adrian Segecic entered the fray two minutes later, and Keshi Anderson followed at 72 minutes as both managers reached for their options.

Millenic Alli and Ibane Bowat arrived within a minute of each other around the 75-minute mark, and Alex Gilbert added further reinforcement at 84 minutes. Portsmouth responded through Colby Bishop and Conor Chaplin in the closing stages, the latter arriving in the 90th minute alongside Cruz Ibeh as the home side pressed to hold their position.

Conor Shaughnessy and Dael Fry both entered late, the latter in stoppage time, suggesting some urgency at the back.

The volume of changes made any settled rhythm difficult to find, but Middlesbrough ultimately held on for a point, leaving Portsmouth with a share of the spoils from a game that offered little in the way of quality but plenty in terms of effort.
