Newcastle United beat Manchester City 3-0 on Saturday evening in a match that gradually slipped away from the visitors after a frantic second half of substitutions and bookings.

Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the lead on 18 minutes, finishing with composure after a swift move down the left. Manchester City responded before the interval when Savinho equalised on 39 minutes, and Omar Marmoush put the visitors ahead two minutes after the restart, leaving Newcastle with a deficit to overturn.

The match then shifted sharply. Joelinton and Dan Burn were booked in the 62nd and 63rd minutes as tempers frayed, and Yoane Wissa drew Newcastle level almost immediately. Marmoush received a second booking on 65 minutes and was dismissed, reducing City to ten men at a moment when they had been the more threatening side. Anthony Gordon was booked on 72 minutes, followed by Antoine Semenyo a minute later, as the referee lost control of proceedings.

Pep Guardiola was sent to the stands on 78 minutes, and City lost Foden through a booking shortly afterwards while Cherki came on in search of a response. Livramento was cautioned on 80 minutes.

Newcastle pressed the advantage their numerical superiority provided. The scoreline finished 3-0, confirmed by Wissa completing the game at 90 minutes. City, reduced and rudderless, offered little in the closing stages. Newcastle were the more organised side when the match mattered most.
