Preston North End lost to Portsmouth on Saturday, a defeat that felt deserved given how frequently the visitors threatened and how little the home side managed in response.

The scoreline of 0-1 reflected a performance in which Portsmouth were the more purposeful team across large stretches, particularly after the interval. Alfie Devine had given Portsmouth momentum before the break, and Michael Smith extended the advantage within a minute of the restart, putting Preston in a position from which they never genuinely recovered.

Preston did press for a way back and the match grew scrappy as the second half developed. Pol Valentín's dismissal in the 59th minute shifted the dynamic again, and the wave of substitutions from the 69th minute onward suggested both managers sensed the game was moving toward a conclusion rather than a reversal.

Makenzie Kirk and Marlon Pack departed around the same time, while Jordan Thompson, Gustavo Caballero, John Swift, Aji Alese and Andrew Moran all entered the action in the final quarter. Thompson picked up a second booking in the 89th minute to compound Preston's difficulties, and Aji Alese followed him shortly after. David Cornell's late dismissal left Portsmouth finishing with nine men, yet the result was not threatened.

Alistair McCann's yellow card earlier in the half had already indicated the frustration building within Preston's ranks. They found no answer to a Portsmouth side that defended their lead with sufficient composure throughout.
