Sunderland drew 1-1 with Liverpool on Wednesday evening in a match that swung dramatically in the final half-hour after looking settled in Liverpool's favour.

Liverpool had controlled the opening period without particular urgency. Virgil van Dijk gave them the lead on 61 minutes, converting from what appeared to be a set piece, and the visitors looked comfortable enough to manage the game from there.

Sunderland's response was sharp. Reinildo Mandava had already given the hosts something to build on with a goal at 24 minutes, keeping them level at the break, and that early contribution seemed to sustain belief in the home side as the match wore on.

The final ten minutes produced a flurry of changes and renewed pressure. Substitutes Lutsharel Geertruida, Romaine Mundle, and Chemsdine Talbi all came on around the 80th minute as both managers shifted their options. Federico Chiesa entered for Liverpool at 88 minutes, and Wilson Isidor came on for Sunderland at 90, though neither had time to alter the outcome.

Joe Gomez received a card at 69 minutes and Curtis Jones followed at 75, introducing a nervy edge to Liverpool's shape at a moment when they could least afford the disruption.

The point leaves both sides with reason for mild satisfaction and mild frustration in equal measure. Sunderland held their own against superior opposition. Liverpool surrendered a lead they should have protected.
