Walsall drew 1-1 with Fleetwood Town on Tuesday evening in a match that shifted considerably in its second half after a largely uneventful opening period.

Mark Helm gave Walsall the lead on 15 minutes, and the home side carried that advantage with reasonable composure into the break. Shaun Rooney's booking just before half-time added a note of tension, but Walsall reached the interval without further alarm.

The second half was a different affair entirely. Within a two-minute spell around the hour mark, Courtney Clarke and Detlef Esapa Osong were both shown cards, tightening the game considerably and unsettling Walsall's rhythm. Fleetwood pressed the opening, and when Albert Adomah and Jamille Matt were both booked on 68 minutes, the disciplinary picture had become almost farcical. Matthew Virtue-Thick added another caution a minute later, giving the referee a difficult evening to manage.

Fleetwood equalised through Aaron Loupalo-Bi on 79 minutes, the same minute that Alexander Pattison was cautioned. The goal came from a spell of sustained pressure and felt like a fair reflection of the second-half balance.

Owen Devonport was booked deep into stoppage time, and Walsall could not find a way back through. The final whistle left the home side having surrendered a lead they held for over an hour, the points shared and both managers with disciplinary concerns to address before the weekend.
