Birmingham City won 2-0 at Charlton Athletic on Saturday afternoon, a result that felt comfortable long before the final whistle.

The visitors controlled possession through much of the first half, with August Priske booked in the 17th minute as Charlton tried to disrupt Birmingham's rhythm through the middle. The home side offered little going forward and rarely troubled the Birmingham backline with any conviction.

Jay Stansfield broke the deadlock on 57 minutes, finishing to give Birmingham the lead their performance deserved. Ibrahim Osman was substituted at the same point, Birmingham's manager opting to manage his resources with one eye on the shape of the second half.

Charlton responded with changes of their own. Joe Rankin-Costello and Charlie Kelman were introduced in the 71st minute, and Kelman made an immediate impression, pulling a goal back three minutes later to give the home crowd brief encouragement.

Birmingham moved quickly to settle matters. Ethan Laird, Miles Leaburn and Patrick Roberts all came on in the 81st minute as the visitors looked to close the game down, and Kanya Fujimoto added further presence in the 86th minute. Macaulay Gillesphey and Conor Coady were booked in the final moments as Charlton pressed without real threat.

The two late yellows for Birmingham suggested some anxiety, but the scoreline was never seriously in doubt. A professional away performance and three deserved points for the visitors.
