Filed Late

Clubs whose accounts at Companies House are overdue right now, or whose most recent filing was made after the nine-month statutory deadline. Persistent lateness is the earliest credible insolvency signal.

Why this is the leading indicator

UK private companies have nine months from their year-end to file accounts at Companies House. A late filing carries an automatic civil penalty and lands the company on the public list of overdue filers. For football clubs, the pattern is consistent: persistent lateness shows up in the year or two before administration. Bury, Macclesfield, Derby and Reading all filed late in the year leading up to the crisis. Reading Football Club is still under transfer embargo because of historical financial reporting issues.

"Filed" here means the statutory accounts arrived more than 273 days (≈9 months) after period end. "Overdue" means the next accounts have already passed their due date right now.
